Origin: Native to southern China and North Vietnam, member of the magnolia family.
Flavour: Pungent warm, sweet, spicy aroma, flavour is similar to aniseeds but stronger liquorice flavour, with hint of cloves and slight bitterness.
Uses: Pairs well with chicken and other poultry. Flavours red-cooked duck, and is an ingredient in soups and stocks. Adds fragrance to pho and added to stews and braises.
